Volvo Repair: 1993 940 Turbo Sedan -Shifter will not come out of park, 1993 volvo 940, volvo 940

I have a 1993 Volvo 940 Turbo Sedan.  I cannot get it to shift out of park without messing around with it for several minutes.  I removed the console and the cover from around the shifter and found  12 cents and a United Way pin so I cleaned around it thinking the 12 cents might have been under something, making it hard to get out of park.  That was not it.  Is there some kind of park release relay or switch or something that I am overlooking?  What are your ideas?

Paula,usually its the microswitch that is the problem.  Did you check the fuse.  Do you put your foot on the brake fully? there is a release lever for emergencies.  Its located down by position 1 on the shifter.  Its in between the fuzzy strips.  You will feel the lever.  Roger
