Volvo Repair: Oil in water resevoir, head gasket sealant, liquid gasket

Question
QUESTION: I found a puddle underneath my car. Found oil in my water reservoir and a little bit of water on my dip stick. Was wondering if there was a solution like a head gasket sealant I could use to pour in there to stop the leak instead of resorting to getting the head gasket replaced? If not, it is possible to fix it ourselves?

ANSWER: Linda, on what model Volvo?  They are not all the same.  Do NOT use that pour in junk PLEASE!  Roger

QUESTION: I'm sorry, the vehicle is a 2001 S40 Volvo. Spoke to a local mechanic and he had said that we could use the sealant as long as we clean (flush) the system out real good. We flushed it last night and put the sealant (Blue Devil)in and followed the direction as indicated. Today we are flushing it again and following procedures to see how it will do. We're hoping it will work. My husband and my son are mechanically incline. I have read in one of your questionnaire on head gasket and it says that I should get a compression test done first. Is it possible that we can fix the head gaskets ourselves? If not, approx. how much would it be? Thank You.

Answer
Linda, I guess you didnt follow my advice.  This engine is not a simple engine and special tools are required.  You need special Volvo liquid gasket for the upper cover and if the timing isnt perfect, the valves will bend.  Typical price for this repair is between 5-7 hundred.  Resurfacing the head at a machine shop is recommended and also if the timing belt and tensioners need to be done, it would be a good time to do it while things are apart.  Also new cam seals, etc and miscellaneous gaskets.  Local mechanics are good for Fords and Chevys.  The have no clue on how complex Volvos can be.
