Volvo Repair: 93 Volvo 240 odometer and timing belt worries, interference engine, trip mileage

Question
1st thing I need to know is wether or not the 93 Volvo 240 has an
interference engine or not. We just bought this car and we have no idea when
the timing belt was done last. Also, while driving it home I realized that the
Odometer doesn't work at all. It reads 109,000 but who knows what the
mileage really is. The dealer neglected to mention this fact to us so I'm a little
worried even though the car appears to be in great shape. Is it normal for an
Odometer to just stop working?

Answer
Shara, the 240 series is NOT an interference engine. It is a common pattern failure. The only fix is to remove it and send it to a specialty shop and have it rebuilt/repaired. Usually around $100.00. In the future, do not reset the trip mileage while the vehicle is in motion.
I'm not sure what state you are in, but most states require the dealer to show the actual miles on the title transfer or state that the odometer is non functioning and the true miles are unknown. This usually helps negotiate a better price when miles are unknown.
