Volvo Repair: 1991 240 wont shift out of park when cold, haynes manual, cold question

Question
QUESTION: My 240 gets stuck in park when very cold, -30*C. This is normally in the mornings. Once we fiddle with it enough that it shifts it will be fine for the rest of the day. Where should I start looking for the problem?

ANSWER: Darren, its usually the shift lock solonoid.  I usually by-pass those things by removing the plastic piece that moves the lever in and out.  Not sure if you want to tackle it.  Is the overide button not working?  Roger

QUESTION: I'm not sure what an override button is, where is it located? All functions of the transmission seem to work well. Today was only -25 and the shift worked fine. Could the solenoid be hanging up because of frost? Will a Haynes manual help me with removing the plastic piece?

Answer
Darren, haynes isnt even good for toilet paper.  No, they dont have that information in there.  At the base of the shifter casing down where the fuzzy stuff is, there should be a small lever that you move to the left and that will release the solonoid so you can get it out of park.  Hope this helped.  Roger
