QUESTION: thanks for responding Roger;  the car is a '91 240... but here is something totally new, and maybe helpful.  i cleared all error codes by pulling  the battery cable, then re-started the car and waited about 5 minutes until the volvo stalled.  while it was in "stall" mode, i popped the hood to run diagnostics.  when i tested terminal # 6, i got an all clear code, but when i tested terminal #2, i got no test codes at all, until the car exited the "stall" mode and fired up, then terminal #2 tested all clear.  so the stall is caused by something killing the electrical circuit of the fuel system,  are there any sensors or relays that would cause this?  thanks a bunch, john

Answer
John, Did some thinking about this one. The problem is, the thing that I think is the problem will not show up on the diagnostics.  Its the ignition power stage on the firewall.  I would check the fuel system relay as well.  If its a 91 date on it, I would replace it.  Thats a start, but it may be other things as well.  If you dont want to keep guessing, I would have a Volvo shop help you out on this.  Roger
