Volvo Repair: 1996 volvo v70 steering rack, lifetime warrantied, volvo v70

Question
Have you any tips for the removal & overhaul of the steering rack? Do know Of any web sites where I may be able to get instructions or drawings to work to?
I have managed to obtain a repair kit, but would like a bit more information before diving in.
            Thank you, Graeme

Answer
Graeme, The removal is pretty straightforward. No tips othe than to practice your swear words first.VBG
I heartily recommend you do NOT attempt this overhaul yourself. Typically, the rack end bushings are shot. This is what makes the seals leak. They machine the end of the aluminum rack tube to fit the sliding surface of the rack gear. It is aluminum on steel. As the rack wears, the aluminum gets hogged out and the play ruins the seals. Remanufacturers C&C the ends of the tubes and press in brass or stainless steel bushings. They then line bore the assembly for fit and alignment. They inspect the rack and pinion gears themselves (second biggest wear points) and replace as necessary. I do not believe these parts are included in your kit? Then they set up the proper pinion gear depth and reseal the rack. I do not believe most people have the acess to these facilities. If you do, go for it. Then be VERY careful on your first test drive. Stay in the parking lot.VBG
I always just replace them with a quality ZF remnufactured unit. They are lifetime warrantied and a quality rebuild. They always rebush them no matter what the wear, unlike many other companies that send out marginal units that fail shortly after the warranty period. Been there, done that. TRW makes an ok unit also. HTH
