Volvo Repair: Shift Flares, flare ups, volvo specialist

My 2001 Volvo S60 has shift flare ups between the 2nd and 3rd shift.  It doesn't happen all the time and is very random.  I took the car to a dealership and had it "fixed" last summer but the flares have returned.  When I took it back to them, I was told I should have gotten a software update.  What is that about?

Alexis, the dealer is right for once.  The transmission module has a software update for this problem.  It should have been done when they "fixed" it.  I guess they forgot to tell you or you declined the repair.  They are the only ones that can do it.  Joes garage cant do it.  Even a Volvo Specialist cant do it because its not cost effective.  Roger
