Volvo Repair: 1999XCV70 volvo power loss or limp-mode, powertrain control module, volvo family

Question
QUESTION: I am sorry for not putting the Model and year.
1999 XC V70 Volvo

I had very hot engine loss due to radiator failure. Had car towed 400 miles to unknown shop. Shop replaced with used engine (37000miles)with warranty. Engine runs perfect but when shift to drive or reverse, no power or possibly in limp-mode. They now tell me I have to tow to dealer because they cannot find problem. I asked for problem codes but they did not tell me. I don't think they have correct machine to find diagnostic codes. What can I do before taking to another repair place?" I did some research online, could it be the ETM(electronic throttle module) or PCM(powertrain control module) or transmission modulator? Please help as I am running out of options.

ANSWER: Robert, it does sound  like a throtle issue.  The dopes probably didnt switch out your throtle body to the new engine.  I had this problem just recently.  Even though her throtle body was done by the dealer a few months ago, the unit failed again.  New throtle and download took care of the problem.  Roger

QUESTION: Many Thanks Roger, I called the shop and they said they did not switch out the throttle body to the new one and have now done so. Works perfect!!

This has never happened before because we are a Volvo family. On my way to pick up 99xcv70, My 1995 850 wagon would not start when getting gas. It just turns over. I checked spark on plug wires, none. Then checked coil wire, None. I have an OLM meter and coil checks out OK. What would be the next step if coil and module are good???? This is our 6th volvo since 1973. They have never left us stranded like this before. I guess when it rains, it pours.

Gratefuly, Robert

ANSWER: Robert, sounds like the cam sensor took a dive.  Did the check engine light come on?  Roger

QUESTION: The check engine light did come on some time ago(3months) and the shop we took it to said everything checked out and that the catalytic conv.went bad and that it would be fine until it needed to be smogged. It has been running fine these 3 months since we moved from that area. The light has been on all this time and running fine so I don't know about the cam sensor. Is there any way of checking or testing the cam sensor? I have since taken the belt cover off and checked the timing marks on both the two cam markers and the crank marker. They all check out so the timing belt did not skip or break although the belt is due to replace because of milage. I was planning to have that done next month with the cat. because registration and smog will be taken care of next month.

Answer
Robert, not really.  Once the cam sensor goes bad its pretty much knowledge kicking in.  No spark no fuel =  bad cam sensor.  you can try to ohm out the sensor at the connector but that doesnt usually tell you anything.  Check to see if the connector for the cam sensor is all crumbled or broken. you can also try to wiggle the connector while cranking.  Sometimes that works.  Roger
