Volvo Repair: volvo oil filter housing tear, oil filter housing, volvo service

Question
Hello - I have a 2006 Volvo S40 Turbo 2.5 AWD.  All of a sudden I began hearing a loud whining sound coming from under the hood.  I brought it to a volvo dealer and the tc knew exactly the poblem...a tear in the oil filter housing, causing pressure to make the whining sound.  With the engine running, he showed me that by lifting the dipstick, it rlieved the pressure and the noide went away.  I was told the repair will be approx. $900.00.  Are you aware if this is a known Volvo issue that I should discuss with Volvo?  With only 55,000 miles, it seems odd that such an expensive repair should be required for something like this.  Also, since the tech knew right away what the problem is, I wonder how common this issue is on Volvos.  Your insight is appreciated...thanks - Ed

Answer
Ed, I would get Volvo tech services involved.  The car is only 5 thousand miles out of warranty.  I have never heard of this one yet. I dont get that many of the newer S40's yet.  Im sure it is a common problem if he knew right away where the problem was.  Like I said, a call to the Volvo service rep is in order.  Roger
