Volvo Repair: Volvo Stalling, volvo 740 gl, engine wiring harness

Question
QUESTION: I have an '89 Volvo 740 GL Automatic with 200,000 miles. As I drive the car it will just Stop running. There is no indication that it is going to stop. The engine just shuts off. Even with my foot on the gas accelerating. I then have to turn the key off and wait for 30 seconds or so, then it will start up. It may do it again or not. I had my mechanic look at it and he is stumped. we have change some sensors and settings. Found a broken ground wire from the battery to the engine and it still stalls. What could this be?

ANSWER: Bill, could be a distributor problem.  Ive seen this before on the 700 series.  When it stalls do you notice if the RPMS just quit?  Roger

QUESTION: The engine will just quit. I can be driving 60mph or at a light and it will just shut down without any warning. The car runs great otherwise. It idols at a 1000 rpm with no prob. Let me know if this helps.

Answer
Bill, Most likely it will be a distributor, impulse sensor or intermittent coil problem but it may be inside the engine wiring harness as well.  Without proper testing, its hard to say what the heck it could be.  I suggest a Volvo shop to help you on this one.  Roger
