Volvo Repair: 90 240 volvo, fuel filler cap, faint buzz

Question
Just pulled into the driveway and sat idling and all of sudden a loud buzzing
noise inside the cab. I noticed if after i turned off the radio, got out and
opened the hood, trunk and the noise is really coming from the middle of the
back seat, so i think fuel pump. but it seems incredibly loud compared to a
fuel pump noise i heard before and had replaced a few years ago. also i was
told there are two fuel pumps and i had one replaced. seriously, this is a loud
buzz, almost sounds like a short in a speaker but the radio is off. once i turn
the car off it goes away. starts right up when i start the car up.

Answer
Jane, my best guess is that it is the pre-pump in the fuel tank. The main pump is under the car right below the rear seat also though. Take the fuel filler cap off and put your ear against the opening to see if it is coming from inside the fuel tank.
After second thought, if it's that loud, I'll bet it's the main. Drop down on one knee and listen under the car near a passenger door. The pre -pump would only make a faint buzz that you could barely hear. Especially if the tank is full.
Be sure to have both pumps tested!!!!!!!!! Most shops won't, they just replace the main and send you on your way. If the pre-pump fails, it makes the main work twice as hard and will burn it out prematurely. Also could be the cause of your "buzz" It is five times more common for the pre-pump to fail rather than the main pump.
