Volvo Repair: Steering Gear end play 1978 242 DL type 2, tie rods, rack pinion

Question
Hi first thank you for your time this is a great site.I am restoring my 1978 242 DL It has A type 2 cam steering rack I have orderd new tie rods ends and steering rods thinking the play I was feeling was the knuckel/ ball socket old tie rods ect. But after removing the old parts it seems like the culprit might be in the rack pinion shaft it feels way loose on the passenger side allmost like a bushing is missing where the shaft exit's the housing the housing is flared so I feel like something belongs in there but my manual dosen't show that detail. Anny thoughts would be greatly aprsheated

Answer
John, It happens on those.  Thats why I converted mine to the newer 240 pump system.  My setup is the newer style compressor so Im not sure if you want to tackle the conversion but that is what I would do.  Those old racks are pretty ancient and the only way would be to have it rebuilt.  Any other questions, let me know.  Roger
