Volvo Repair: Low oil pressure warning on an 01 volvo v70, low oil pressure, volvo v70

Question

Mark,
hello I had asked Roger about this earlier we traded a few e-mails and I would ask him because he is up to speed on where I am but he is not available currently.  I will try to briefly get you up to speed.  I purchased an 01 v70 and had the fairly common low oil pressure warning at idle.  The fix for this problem is to drop the pan and replace the o-rings and seals; clean any sludge and reassemble.  However I dropped the pan today and found a square orifice containing light tan goo.  This usually means water mixed with oil, but it is not in the pan or the oil it seems to be limited to this one area.  I would like to know where this goes and why it would be like this the orifice is in the 2nd cylinder bay on the same side as the oil filter.  Hopefully you can help me determine if I have additional problems.  I have attached a pic to help explain.

Thanks,
Bill

Answer
Bill, I believe that is just the oil return for the head and also acts as a crankcase breather. All the moisture goes through there as the engine warms and it evaporates. Just clean it as best you can and move on. In other words, it's normal.

Happy New Year!

Mark
