Volvo Repair: volvo v70 catalytic converter, independent volvo repair, volvo v70

Question
I have a 2002 Volvo V70 with about 92k miles.  I'm the 2nd owner, purchased in Jan 2006 with 29k miles.  Car has had several issues, mostly AC problems plus had to have a throttle body replacement earlier this year. Was under 6 year extended warranty through July.

On Friday, I was driving along and suddenly the car would not accelerate beyond 30-35 mph.  It continued to run and proceeded forward, but no power when depressing accelerator and couldn't get up to speed.  Managed to get it to my independent Volvo repair shop, who we've worked with for years.  He told me yesterday I need a catalytic converter - $1400 repair ($1144 cat conv, some other part, $237 labor).  I am in shock.  I called the dealer service person and asked if they could somehow get Volvo to cover.  Apparently emissions warranty was 5 yrs 80k miles and was extended to 8 yrs 80 k miles.

Do you have any idea if I can somehow get Volvo to cover this?  Is this an issue with this model year or Volvos in general?  92k miles for a garaged, continuously serviced car seems young to need a cat converter, but I'm no expert.  Just amazed at all the problems this car has had.

Any help or comments would be much appreciated.

Answer
Linda, Amazingly I actually have one in the shop right now for this issue.  Its pretty much up to the Volvo rep if he wants to goodwill the repair or not.  Unfortunately this is a common issue with these cars.  Throtle issues are under a factory recall so you were obviously covered for that.  The issues with these are what you said.  Other than this unfortunate incident with the cat, you have one of the better models.  Roger
