Volvo Repair: 1988 Volvo 240 Headlight Problem, low beams, inner fender

Question
Mark,

My teenagers 1988 Volvo 240 sedan has a non-functioning high beam function.  Low beam and all other lights/signals are working.  With lights on low and high beam is engaged by pulling back on turn signal arm, head lights go out completely.  Autozone store says it is the dimmer switch.  My question, are they correct and how hard is it for a non-mechanic (me) to fix or should this go to a shop/dealer?

Answer
Jeff, dimmer switch??? ROFLMAO :) First, make sure the headlight bulbs are not burned out on the high beam side. Then, I would check out the headlight relay. In relay box, top of left inner fender. Big black one with lots of pins. Tap on it while your daughter holds the stick back with the low beams on. If you see any flicker or change in the headlights, replace the relay. It should make an audible click everytime you pull the stick back. If it's not clicking, it still may be bad or your stalk switch is bad. Seldom the switch, usually the relay. If all lights go out when pulling back, that tells you that the switch is sending the signal to the relay. Again, you should hear/feel it click.

P.S. Run, do not walk, from that "guy" at the Autozone. He must be on commission. VBG
