QUESTION: Hello, i have a question i was hoping someone can answer for me. I own a 1998 Volvo V70 (non-turbo) 5-cyl. i was replacing the head gasket and as i was replacing the seals on the camshafts there was a small metal bracket (opposite side of the cam gear) that is held on by a 10mm bolt, i needed to take off that bolt  to take off the old seals and replace with new ones, but after doing that, i was putting it back together and noticed the metal bracket can go on 2 ways, but i do not remember how it was when i was took it off. This metal piece is on the end of the exhaust camshaft and will go in both ways, but im worried that putting it on wrong will mess something up as there is a sensor that reads it as it rotates. if anyone knows what the correct way the piece goes on it, that would be a big help. if its not really cleat what i am asking here, please email me. Thanks in advance!

ANSWER:    Sergey, if I read this correctly, you are talking about the Hall effect transmitter? The bumps/tabs/fins should face the sensor. (Away from the engine.)

QUESTION: ok, im not sure exactly what the Hall effect transmitter is, so i drew up a bit of an explanation. its a side and top view of the "bracket" thing that connects to the exhaust camshaft on the opposite end of the cam gears. Its bolted on with one 10mm bolt and can go one 2 ways because of the little tabs, im trying to find out if the area that's the "half circle" standing up is supposed to be on the lobe side or not (using the first/closest) one as the reference.

Answer
Sergey, I see your dilemma. Very nice drawing by the way. The blob thingy is the transmitter. A fixed magnet I believe. My memory is that it lines up with the cam lobe. It's a 50-50 guess, but I would go that route. If you have problems, flip it around.
Another thought is if you TDC everything up, that magnet should be lined up with the external sensor. HTH
