Volvo Repair: 2001 S80 Front End Noises, control arm bushings, grease fittings

Question
I have a 2001 S80 with 91K miles on it and when the weather gets cold the front end emits a squeaking sound and when I take a bump I hear metal on metal.  I took it to two mechanics and they both told me the front end is tight.  I also checked and there are no grease fittings.  Can you help?

Answer
Bruce, Control arm bushings or control arm ball joints. Possible bad strut or strut bushing, but I doubt it. The "ungreaseable" part is your clue ????? What you are probably hearing is a "dry joint" that hasn't worn enough yet to be visible to the naked eye?
Take it to someone who has "electronic ears" (Fancy stethoscope) and have them pinpoint the noise. In real tough situations, there is a solution called "Chassis ears" You connect electronic transponders to different points on the chassis until you locate it.HTH
