Volvo Repair: Clutch problem, volvo 460 gle, hydraulic clutches

I own a 94 Volvo 460 GLE (European spec). My husband put the car in reverse heard a loud pop and the clutch pedal dropped to the floor. I am assuming it is the clutch cable. I was wondering if you could tell me where I should be looking for the clutch cable and how I can replace it if it turns out I am right. Is this something I should leave to a qualified mechanic or is this something a mechanically inclined person can accomplish on their own?

Veronica, Ive never worked on those.  Not sure if those have cables or if they are hydraulic clutches.  From the sound of it though, it sounds like a cable snapped.  You look for the cable on top of the transmission but I would probably leave it to a mechanic to do.  Roger
