Volvo Repair: Timing belt, tensioner pulley, volvo 850

Question
Hi,  In June 2006 I purchased a Volvo 850 Sedan (Non-Turbo)  5-speed trans.
with 85,000 miles.  I don't have much history on the car. I just had a Volvo
trained mechanic tell me the timing belt may be due for replacement? I was
quoted $350.00 parts and labor. He said he found a tag on the engine that
reads "replaced at 60,000 miles."   The car currently has 118,000 miles now.
How many miles can be put on this belt?  Should I go by the 'years of wear',
or the mileage?

Answer
Suzanne, These are 70 Thousand mile belts.  Some one did the belt early.  We recommend 7 years or the milage.  He should replace the tensioner, Idler pulley and tensioner pulley as well as we have seen that to be the major cause of belt failure.  Hope this helped.  Roger
