Volvo Repair: 1989 Volvo 740, reliability factor, volvo 740

Question
So I have been given this Volvo for a car and it has 400,000km on it, how soon should I be looking at I'm going to have to spend money to keep it in good repair or is it worth it?  I've heard that Volvo's will go hundreds of thousands of km on their engines, is this to be trusted?  Basically I want to know the reliability factor, the cost, etc.

Answer
Mary, that's a very open ended question. The vehicle would first have to have a thorough inspection to determine it's current state. Then it would be very important to know the prior service history to in any way shape or form be able to form an opinion of future expense.

In general. The 7 series are very reliable vehicles. I put 400,000miles on my last one and sold it running perfectly. As Volvos go, the 7 and 2 series are reasonable to maintain, as long as you keep up with the services.
