Volvo Repair: 1999 Volvo V70 2.4 Turbo Stalled, volvo v70 awd, 1999 volvo v70

Question
Hi

I have a 1999 Volvo V70 AWD Cross Country 2.5L Turbo and experienced an engine stall.  According to the dealer records the ETM was replaced in 2007 with Volvo’s new and improved unit.  In addition, the vehicle received the updated computer software.  While traveling approx. 20 mph, I put the accelerator pedal to the floor, the engine seemed to hesitate and then stalled.  All the bells and whistle warning lights activated.  I put the transmission into neutral and it started but appeared to have low RPM’s?  The previous owner indicated that the dealer had recently told him that the “Turbo Tubes” is causing the car to stall and would cost $500.00 to repair.  The motor is clean but appears to have an oil buildup around the turbo hoses (back of engine driverside)

Answer
George, the firt thing I would do is check for leaks. Both on the vacuum side, and then on the tubo pressure side. Check the turbo big rubber and plastic boots for cracks or holes. As the turbo ages and pushes oil out the discharge side, it collects in the low spots on the boots and "rots" the rubber and plastic. Then on the next big boost, it blows a hole in  it. Very common On higher mileage vehicles. (You didn't mention miles.)
If that all checks out, I would remove the turbo pressure and intake boots and check the turbine for excessive radial and axial play. Let me know.
