Volvo Repair: loud humming from front drivers side area, front wheel bearing, volvo s60 awd

Question
Hello Roger,
I recently purchased a 2002 volvo s60 awd which has 116000 miles on it.  I have a question regarding a "humming" sound that sounds like it is coming from the front drivers side of the car. It gets louder as I speed up and lessens as I slow down.  It is not affected by the rpm of the engine or the gear that the car is in while driving, but increases or decreases based on the speed of the car, such as going down a hill.  It seems to have gotten progressively louder over the past week or so.  Do you think this may be from the transmission, or a bearing of some sort.  I looked a the breaks and them seem to have a good amount of pad left on them. (very concerned...)
Thank you for any help.

If I may also ask a second question that you may or maynot have an answer for.
From the time I first bought the car. ( from a little dealer)  Only when driving in the rain, when I go through puddles or very wet roads, the car will make a VERY LOUD siren sound coming from the front of the car and will continue at a constant note until the car comes to a complete stop.  Sometimes, it will go away on it's on or it will continue for several minutes.  Again, it is only on very wet roads and is not affected by speed or gear. Have you ever heard of that, and do you think it may have anything to do with the turbo?

Thank you very much for any help.  I look forward to your reply!!

Answer
Joe, the humming sound sounds like the left front wheel bearing needs to be replaced.  The other noise I have never heard of such a thing, but it is possible that the alarm siren is getting wet and just goes off.  The stupid thing is located under the right front wheel so maybe water is getting in the connector.  Either way this needs to be scanned at a Volvo shop for diagnosis.  Roger
