Volvo Repair: 1990 Volvo 740GL AC replacement, condensor, c oil

Question
I have a 740 Volvo and My AC is now working and I took it to the mechanic and he quoted me a price of $1500 for both the compressor and condenser to be replaced. I have been shopping on line and the cost of both a compressor and condenser is around $500. So why does it cost a $1000 to replace these parts? What I want to know is what is the expected time it should take to replace these parts?

Answer
Jon, Its like this.  You can find junk online for less and later on replace the part again or pay a little more and get quality stuff that will last a while.  A compressor for your car should be around $350 and the condensor about 150.  Labor should be about 4 hours for the compressor and about another 1-2 on the condensor.  You have to remember that O-rings, accumulator, A/C oil, Evacuate the system, etc are to be accounted for.  He is a bit high on labor but Im sure he is marking up the price up the parts too high as well.  Roger
