Volvo Repair: 97, Volvo V70 2.4/ 20 valve not turbo S/W, volvo v70, piston rods

Question
Car in exc condition, 158 000km. Hit stone on dirt @ 80kmh (50mph).Drove another 8km when oil pres warning light came on. Car immediately lost power and I stopped. Checked dipstick. Not a drop! Noticed some smoke from dipstick hole.saw a 1" crack in sump. Repaired it with petrol cloth and Pratley Steel. Filled up with oil. Started engine. Sounded OK, drove another 8km(5miles) Same signs. Red light, Heard slight knocking sound, lost engine power and stopped. This time sump seemed OK. Suspect head gasket. Tried to restart with oil. Heard engine knock and switched off immediately! What are chances of salvage most of engine? Dealers telephonically qoted R30 to R50k repair cost. (That is worth of another complete car). Can silinder head still be OK? Can I remove sump and assess damage to crank, Conrods, pistons? What with some luck can be the minimum repair work needed to be mobile again? Worst scenario, can I consider recon Jap engine, knowing the Volvo is transverse mounted FWD design. Appreciate any advice as can't trust anybody outside.

Answer
Ters, I have seen when you have this kind of hit, the piston rods somehow get rattled and spin the bearings.  I have seen it fly out the side of the block while inspecting a car for damage.  What would you want to put a Jap engine in a Volvo?  Thats ridiculous.  Cylinder head will probably be fine.  You need to tear the lower portion of the engine to see whats going on.  Hard to say until its apart.  Roger
