Volvo Repair: 2000 Volvo S80 T6: DSTC stays on, Engine Mount, engine squeal, volvo s80 t6, 2000 volvo s80 t6

Question
QUESTION: Hello!
I just bought a 2000 T6. The DSTC light stays on all the time. The top engine mount has rubber shavings next to it on the intake cover. It has an engine squeal from about 1500-2500 rpm when warm. I just read another post for the "turn stops"? (front tires rubbing) how hard are they to replace? It has 102K miles - should I have the timing belt done now? Any inherent problems with these vehicles? Sorry for all the questions in one shot. Thanks a million for your help.

ANSWER: Scott, That was a big mistake.  You are now part of the 99-00 S80 Headache group.  Better buy lots of Motrin and aspirin because this is the beginning of starting to dump lots of cash in this car to get it right.  First is the DSTC.  Most likely that is going to be the ABS control unit.  That will run about $700 bucks includint labor.  Since it has 102k on it, The timing belt and tensioner need to be replaced.  Should be done at the 105k service.  Steering stops are just held in by 2 bolts.  Easy to do.  You  are in for lots of headaches, especially with a T6.  2 Turbos, more headaches.  Did I mention the headaches?  Anyway, The squeal can be anything from a belt to a pulley.  I would have to hear the noise.  I hope you have a Volvo shop picked out.  If not, I can help you in that department.  Roger

QUESTION: The low book is around $8K and I got it for $5K so I'm ok with a little bit of work. Will the car be ok for a year or two? Or should I fix the problems and sell it for a profit now and buy a newer year?

ANSWER: Scott, well, If you buy a newer year, just stay away from the S80.  Even the newer ones are headaches.  Get an S60 instead.  If you do decide to keep it, fix the DTSC. Hope this helped.  Roger

QUESTION: Roger,
What is different between the 60 & 80? Do they have different drive train or electronics? Is the ABS module something I can replace?
Thanks,
      Scott

Answer
Scott, the 60 is basically an 850 with updated electronics.  More reliable than the 80.  You probably can replace the module but it is a little tricky.  Air filter box needs to come out and you need an inverted e4 torx socket.  Study it and see if you want to tackle it. Yes, the 60 has a better trans versus that General Motors junk they put in there.  Roger
