Volvo Repair: 1995 - 940 turbo sedan - White Smoke coming from tail pipe, worse case scenario, head gasket

Question
Hi,
I am having white smoke coming from my tail pipe.  Usually, it only happens when I am in reverse, and when I shift into drive (for the first few seconds).  It has a smell to it...I guess you would say it's a rich, almost burned smell to it???  I also want to mention that I've noticed my city gas mileage is declining.  Any idea as to what could be going on?  Thanks for your help!!

Answer
Cindy, It needs to go on nicorette to control the smoking.  HAHA.  Anyway, It can be a few things so I will leave the worse case scenario for last.  First I would check all the rubber Turbo hoses.  If there are any hole in it, it would cause the car to not have much boost and you would hear a funny whoosing sound while trying to accellerate. That would cause bad gas milage.  A faulty air mass meter can cause white smoke.  A Turbo Charger that is starting to fail can also cause it as well as a Leaky head gasket.  Any of these things needs to be check by a Good Volvo shop for accurate diagnosis.  I hope this helped.  Roger
