Volvo Repair: Volvo Repair, volvo 240 dl, fuel pump relay

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a 1981 Volvo 240 DL.  Won't start & was told it was the fuel pump.  I stupidly replaced the fuel filter & in line pump prior to testing.  Put my electrical tester on wires to pump & it has no electricity going to it.  Checked fuses.  Pretty mechanically inclined, but this stumps me.  Thank's for any help.

ANSWER: Cory, it can be a number of things especially on the old mechanical injection.  There is a fuel relay on either the upper left drivers area by the fuse box or its under the passenger area by the fuel control unit.  I would there first.  Roger

QUESTION: Thank you for your fast reply.  I checked the fuel pump relay.  Yep a wire got so hot leading into it, it melted some of the insulation.  Took the relay out & opened it up. (As I had to special order the part & was in a hurry.) Same wire on #30 terminal was off as it melted the solder. I soldered the wire back on but there is still no power going to the in line pump I replaced.  Plan on getting the relay on 2-28-08 & replacing.  If this doesn't work, what else could it be?  Wiring?  Is there a fuel pump reset switch on this car? I have been trying to get a wiring diagram but can't find one & I'm spending much more on parts than I thought. Thank you for your help.

ANSWER: Cory, I bought a wiring diagram for my 1980 on EBAY.  Its a wiring diagram on CD.  you get power also from the ignition control unit. Did you check for spark?  No spark= no fuel.  Is this a 2 door DL?  If you give up I need a new project.  HA.  Roger

QUESTION: I replaced the fuel pump relay now & still no electricity going to the in-line pump.  If the in-tank pump is bad it won't prevent power from going to the in-line pump will it?  This is a 4 Door 1981 240 DL.  Is the Ignition control Unit the ting that sits right by the fuel injection unit on top of the engine?  If so that thing humms while the key is on so I would guess it's working.  Thank you for your help.

Answer
Cory, no, the ignition control unit is that black box over by the washer bottle.  No, if the tank pump is bad it wont prevent power.  Did you happen to check the timing belt to see if it was broken?  Thought I would ask.  Im assuming you checked all the basics before you started asking these questions.  Roger
