Volvo Repair: 960 surging at idle, light flickers, oil light

Question
I have a 95 960 with 170,000 miles.  It is starting surge (400-1100 rpm) when at a stop sign.  At the low end the oil light flickers.  Is the engine is danger? Is there a part I can replace? Thanks

Answer
Eric, It sounds like an air mass meter that is failing.  Check you oil level.  If its good then the car will need an oil pump reseal.  This should be done at a Volvo shop.  The o-ring at the oil pan and inside the pan are prone to failure.  We have done quite a few of these.  Roger
