Volvo Repair: 1989 Volvo 760 GLE Trans, volvo 760 gle, volvo 760

I just picked up this car dirt cheap and am trying to get it roadworthy (be advised I am not real mechanical). The transmission (auto) shifts to 2nd and 3rd fine, but never goes into a higher gear. After 50 MPH, the RPMs just increase (up to maybe 3500 around 65MPH?). Pressing the button on the shifter lights up the arrow but doesn't feel like it does anything. Is it a problem with that?

Rich, if the arrow comes on, that means its out of o/d.  If it never is going into the higher gear then you may have an issue with the solonoid on the trans.  Turn the key on and press the button on the shifter.  If you can hear a clicking noise on the trans then the solonoid is working.  If that is the case, there is some internal issues in the trans.  Roger
