Volvo Repair: volvo shifting problem, volvo v70 cross country, 2001 volvo v70

Question
We have a 2001 Volvo v70 Cross Country with about 130K miles on it.  We are second owners - bought it about 6 months ago.  Recently we've been noticing a problem with the gear shifting - mostly from 2nd to 3rd, but more and more it's problematic in all lower gears.  It revs up and won't shift and then suddenly jerks into the next gear.  We took it to an independent volvo service center and they ran the computer on it and drove it and told us there was no problem.  But clearly there is - and it's getting worse.  Today the 'check engine' light came on.  I'm a little concerned as we are (proudly) and "one-car family", so don't have a back up car.  I'm thinking it might be a transmission problem.  What are you thoughts?  If it might be a transmission problem, do you know where the best place to take it is - I imagine the dealerships are pricey.  We live in Sacramento, CA.
Thanks for your help!
Belinda.

Answer
Belinda, Im surprised that the independent shop didnt catch that.  This is a pure transmission symptom that needs to be addressed.  I dont know of any other shops in that area.  I would get a price from the dealer.  Do NOT go to AAMCO or any other those places.  You are asking for nothing but trouble.  Seen too many issues with those places.  Good luck.  Roger
