Volvo Repair: Timing Belt Warranty Question, vw jetta, coolant leak

Question
Sir,

I'm inquiring about a situation I'm currently in with at 2001 VW Jetta.  I had the timing belt and tensioner replaced by a dealership in May of this year and as of today I'm told that the timing belt has broken off and damaged my engine. The repair shop has informed me that I will need to replace the entire engine.  According to my receipt from the dealership for the timing belt (parts and labor) both are covered under warranty.  Is the dealership responsible for the damages caused by the broken timing belt????

Answer
I would think so. You didn't mention replacement of an idler pulley- most cars have them. I would find out specifically what failed. You also didn't mention whether you had a coolant leak, which can lead to early failure of timing belts. Did they change the water pump when the belt was replaced?
