Volvo Repair: 1991 Volvo 740, volvo 740, solonoid

Hello Roger. A friend of mine just discovered a problem with her car. When she first starts driving it, the auto trans won't go into fourth gear. After a half hour of driving, it will go into fourth and it's good for the rest of the day, provided the car doesn't sit long enough for the tranny to cool all the way back down. I don't know much about cars and she doesn't want to go to a service shop without some idea of what might be wrong with it. Any suggestions?

Jay, it sounds like the transmission is starting to have some internal issues. An overdrive solonoid and relay may also be the culprit as well.  A transmission serve may help the situation but I would have her take the car to a reputable Volvo shop.  Roger
