Volvo Repair: Volvo 740 starting problem, volvo 740 gle, fuel pump relay

Question
I just bought a 1987 Volvo 740 GLE non-turbo. The first two days I had the car it ran just fine. The third day, and nearly every day since, the car has had problems starting. At first, the engine would start fine and turn over. When I shifted into Reverse or drive, the engine would cut out. I would then restart the car and it would run the whole day. But the next morning, the car did the same thing. After a week, I took it to the Volvo dealership I bought it at and they said it was a dirty throttle housing. The next morning the car started fine. The day after that, the car took 5 seconds to turn over and then gave out. Now it takes a long time to turn over and the engine cuts out. The car only has 65k miles on it and I don't want to damage a great car like this.

As a side note, I never start the car with the A/C or anything else running.

Thank you

Answer
Probably a bad fuel pump relay. You don't have to turn off the ac when starting. The AC will not engage until it receives a signal from the alternator showing it is charging the system. So don't worry about making sure everything is off when starting.
