Volvo Repair: 89 Volvo timing belt, interference engines, volvo 740gle

Question
QUESTION: I'm buying an 89 Volvo 740GLE wagon with 109k miles. Because of the mileage I'm worried that it might need a timing belt soon. Is it a belt or chain? Is the engine Non-Interference?

ANSWER: Trevor, is it a 16 valve engine?  Roger

QUESTION: Yes I saw 16 valve clearly on the valve cover. It's a straight 4, RWD, the Guy says you take a top cover off to get to the plugs, distributor in a tough spot, straight back, middle, against firewall... My Camry with 150k has not been the same since I blew the belt (original) at 60mph so I'm very concerned with timing belts now.

Answer
Trevor, unfortunately that motor sucks.  Do yourself a favor and stay away from that thing. There are 2 belts that need to be replaced.  They are also 50 thousand mile belts. They are interference engines and when things break its very costly to repair.  Find a 8 valve 4 cylinder and you will be glad you did.  Roger
