Volvo Repair: Air Conditioner-86- 240, volvo 240, expansion valve

Question
I bought a 1986, Volvo 240, about 2 years ago.  It has 166,000 miles.  The air conditioner did not work when I bought it and I have decided to check into fixing it.  It blows a fuse everytime you turn it on, so it is hard to check it out.  Does this probably mean the compressor is froze up.  What major components most likely need replaced, since it has not worked in a long time?

Answer
Try disconnecting the compressor and see if it blows the fuse. You will first have to test the system to see if it will hold vacuum and then pressure test the system and then finally a performance test. Chances are it will have a leak and be empty.Find the leak and replace the leaking component and the receiver drier. You may also need a expansion valve.Find the short first.
