Volvo Repair: Volvo 240 wont start, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump relay

Question
Dear Robert,

I have a 1993 240 Volvo wagon that won't start.  Last week it would start but idled rough.  Now it just cranks and cranks but never starts.  I'm thinking fuel system.  The fueld pump fues is OK.  I even changed it just to make sure but still does not start.

Any sugesstions?  I'm just a weekend mechanic.  I normally would take the car to my mechanic but I'm a bit strapped for cash.  If the problem is something simple that I can fix great, if not I need to sell it.

Thanks for any help you can give!!!

Regards,

Steve

Answer
Do you have spark? Is fuel pump running?(you should be able to hear or feel it buzz)Check to see if there is fuel coming out of the fuel pressure regulator vacuum port(it is located at the front of the fuel rail on top of the intake manifold)Replace all fuses and clean all contacts.Passenger side under dash there is a fuel pump relay (white box) make sure that isn't original(it is stamped with a date)Then we'll check fault codes...under hood drivers side in the rear of the engine compartment, small black box, stick the probe in position 2 and turn on the ignition and press the button for 3 seconds, it will flash a series of codes Ex 1-2-1 or 2-3-2 record all codes!repeat this procedure until a fault repeats itself. Then press and hold the button for 5 seconds and the light will come on steady, press and hold the button again for 5 seconds, this will reset the fault codes. Try to start the car and recheck fault codes.Let me know
