Volvo Repair: Volvo 740 wagon rear passenger door wont open, volvo specialist, hot glue

Question
Hi there. I have a 1988 740 wagon and a few weeks back I noticed that the rear passenger door won't open. Not from the outside, nor from the inside. You can engage the handle, but nothing happens; ditto from the inside. Any thoughts? I took it into my local (non-Volvo specialist) shop and he didn't have any luck, either.

Answer
Well it probably won't open from the inside because the child safety lock is on. You can remove the inner trim pieces to give yourself a little extra room. See if you can trip the child safety switch on the latch. If that doesn't work you are going to have to remove the door panel and try to trip the latch from the inside. The fulcrum pin has probably failed on the exterior door handle and is just hanging there... a long thin screwdriver should be all you need to trip that, I've done that so many times...or the lock motor has failed and the child safety switch is on. Trip the lock by hand (must remove the door panel) to remove the door panel
remove speaker grille and one screw behind speaker grille
remove lock knob
remove the three clips at the bottom of the door panel
remove the courtesy light lense on the edge of the door
remove the clip behind the courtesy light lens
Remove the inner door release bezel(1/2 turn on the plastic clip)
Pull up and out, it won't be easy so don't be too gentle and don't be discouraged if some of the lower clip retainers come off with the door panel, use some clear silicone adhesive or hot glue to glue to retainers back in place (onto the door panel) They come off all the time
