Volvo Repair: Estimated repair needs & Costs for Volvo 240, oil pressure sensors, valve cover gasket

Question
I have an automatic 1993 Volvo 240 that runs fine.  However, I seem to have a oil leak near the rear of the engine.  What could be causing this, and what is the estimated cost of repair?

Thanks,
James

Answer
Oil collects there from numerous spots. The least expensive being a valve cover gasket or cam plug. Oil will blow back from front engine seals (cam, aux, and crank)replace the timing and drive belts at the same time. Oil pan gaskets are also a common culprit. But I think the major one is the rear main seal. The transmission must be removed to replace it.If the transmission has any leaks that is the time to address those. Even if its not leaking the front transmission pump seal should be replaced at that time.Make sure the breather is serviced also. The breather box has two seals that can leak and collect there as well.Cost varies by locale so I can give you estimates of time.
Valve cover gasket and cam plug w valve adjustment 1.3
Timing and drive belts with front engine seal replacement 1.5-2.0
Breather box seals 1.0
Oil pan gasket 2.5
Rear main seal w ft trans seal 4.0
Seals and O rings are usually inexpensive.
Oil pressure sensors can leak and collect there as well.
Oh and if this was a sudden oil leak after a oil change make sure the filter isn't leaking or that residual oil didn't get washed out of splash pan.
