Volvo Repair: 1990 volvo 740 acceleration issue, battery gauge, volvo 740

Question
QUESTION: Hi Robert:

I own a 1990 Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler wagon with 136,000 miles on it.  I have had numerous repairs done over the past two years, most of which have been simple replacements of worn out parts (alternator, battery, belts, distributor cap, various connections, etc)

Recently I have noticed that after driving for awhile, the car seems to slow down. When I accelerate, the car makes a revving-up  sound not unlike if I had it in neutral and hit the gas. Also, after idling at a light, the battery gauge will drop but move back up when I move forward.  This has been going on for some time and the car still seems to work. I have a great mechanic here in Washington, DC but they haven't found any problems.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ANSWER: Sounds like the transmission might be starting to slip. Check the fluid level and color, if it is dark you may need a service/repair. With that mileage hope for a low fluid level and minor leak repair.

QUESTION: Hi Robert:

Thanks for your speedy reply!  Hope you don't mind a follow-up question.  So there might be a leak in the transmission? Also, what is the ballpark figure for a rebuilt transmission--I assume it's definitely over $1000. Thanks again!

Answer
Yes, they are known to leak. Tailshaft bushings wear and replacing the seal is only temporary, you should also replace the bushing.I've had some luck adding a transmission conditioner and stop leak for minor all around leakers. Yes over 1000, there are some good used ones available in junkyards that would be less expensive.
