Volvo Repair: alt/baro press sensor 98S70, baro press, emissions test

Question
QUESTION: Hi, quick question on ’98 S70 Volvo. My mechanic says I need a new altitude/barometric sensor in order to pass emissions. He also says it’s the reason my check engine light is on. Do you agree that it must be replaced in order to pass? Secondly, the charge is $200 for the part & $50 for labor. It looks like I can get the part on-line for much less. Is this a DIY job or does it require a mechanic? Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: This is a very easily replaced component. If the code is stored and cleared without replacing, chnces are the code will return.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick reply; do you agree that it must be replaced in order for it to pass emissions test?

Answer
If the code can be cleared and the fault doesn't immediately return you may be able to pass an emmissions test. Chances are the fault will eventually, if not immediately return. If fault codes are reset and the car not driven long enough to complete all of the diagnostics, they will not pass your car.
