Volvo Repair: VOLVO 850 Air Conditioning Issues, volvo 850, prybar

Question
Hello, I have a 95 850 turbo that runs great. The ac starts up, blows nice and cold for about 5 minutes then gets warm. The fan continues to blow but it is obvious that the core is no longer getting cold. If I turn the system off for about 10 - 15 minutes, it will start up again blowing cold and goes into the same 5 minutes on then warm cycle. It does this in Auto as well as manual positions on the dial. Any ideas on what the culprit might be? Thanks for your time and trouble.

Answer
Brion, I see this all the time. Im assuming that the pressures have been tested and refrigerant levels are fine.  What happens is that the ac clutch spreads out over the years.  What I want you to do is run the a/c and let it run until it stops. Be careful when you do the following, push on the clutch with a prybar and see if it reengages.  If so you can do 2 things.  1 is reshim the clutch or 2 replace the compressor.  There also may be a intermittent issue with the A/C control head.  Let me know your findings.  Roger
