Volvo Repair: Volvo turbo and cowling area rain drainage, rubber hoses, oil light

Question
My 1990 740 turbo wagon started making a noise like I had a tin pie plate under the hood. No real loss of power, but my oil light went on. I checked the oil, made sure it was adequate, asked around, and was told to warm it up, punch the accelerator and watch for a cloud of black smoke. I did, got a cloud of black smoke. Did it again 2-3 times, smoke changed to blue and just a haze. When I punched it, the power was less immediately responsive than it had been in the past, but it still kicked into passing gear. Oil light stayed on. Stopped the car, turned it off, started it up, the oil light comes on in about 1 minute or so.

I thought it was my alternator making the noise initially, but checked it out, it's OK.

Answer
Roddy, you are probably going to need a oil pump reseal.  I have done these before when the oil light came on.  As far as the smoke, first check all your rubber hoses and see if there are any holes in them.  The turbo may be passing oil as well.  Roger
