Volvo Repair: 1992 740 GL Wagon, shift cable, safe car

Question
Roger, your expertise is a tremendous resource - thank you in advance for your help. I am considering purchase of a 1992 740 GL wagon from a private owner. The vehicle is an automatic with about 120k miles, and has a few issues. The speedometer is erratic, sometimes indicating 70 mph regardless of speed. One of the power windows is out, apparently a motor, the a/c needs service although the compressor appears to function, and the trans seems to me to hold lower gears longer than I would expect before an upshift. Other than that, it seems capable of being a safe option for my 18 yr old son. Do any of these issues give you pause, and is this model a relatively reliable one?

Answer
Jon, I like the 740 but there are 2 fuel systems that came with the car and I really dont care for the one.  Its called a regina rex system and there is only 1 fuel pump and its in the tank.  Its reliable but when the pump goes, it can be costly to repair properly.  The Speedometer unfortunately is in the head unit itself.  New is about 600 bucks.  The window is most likely a switch.  The motors fail but not very often.  The A/C can  be anything from a recharge to various leaks but overall a good system.  The trans shifting is normal but I would check the shift cable to see if its moving freely.  In my opinion, this is a great safe car for a teen. Its not a power house but will get him from point a to point b.   I would buy it but be prepared to put a few bucks into it.  Roger
