Volvo Repair: overheating but no heat, heater control valve, clutch fan

Question
at first, my 79 244 was telling me its overheating, though a few munites later normal.  the antifreeze level is ok.  and it just so happens the heat in the car is blowing ice cold air.  today i put in a new thermostat.  started the car to watch the needle rise to the top of the gauge.  added some water and it dipped a little.  still no heat.  readiator was pretty darn warm for only running 5 minutes or so.

Oh yeah, I was told a while back that I have a slow leak in the water pump.

Any thoughts?

Answer
eddie, the heater control valve is probably the culprit.  Its by your right foot by the accelerator.  It might be clogged or the cable isnt letting it open fully.  Your clutch fan on the engine may not be operating correctly for the overheating issue.  Roger
