Volvo Repair: Volvo Catalytic Converter, volvo v70, valve job

Question
I am sorry, I have a 1998 Volvo V70, I purchased a new muffler and had it installed locally and they stated I needed a new catalytic converter.  I have spend a lot of money lately getting the car in better condition.  Thanks, Lisa

-----Question-----
Can I have a universal catalytic converter installed instead of buying the direct fit version.  It is a lot higher.

Also, my volvo is burning oil, not leaking, any suggestions?

Lisa, It would help if you told me what year and model you have.  Roger

Answer
Lisa, why are they saying you need a new cat?  Is it rattling or is there a check engine light code pointing to the cat?  The universal cats work but you will have problems with the check engine light.  They make good aftermarket cats that bolt on nicely.  I can give you an idea on what it will cost.  I looked and it would be around 600 bucks for a decent cat.  To answer your other question.  Its not uncommon for these engines to burn oil.  Keep checking your oil every other time you fill up.  The only true way to stop the burning is to do a Valve job and that can get costly.  Roger
