Volvo Repair: 240 Volvo Emergency Brake, emergency brake, top notch

I pulled up my Emergency brake today with the same force I usually do.  I lifted it up to the tip top notch just like always too.  But today for some reason, the button to press to make it go down is sticking out really far and to top it all off, it won't go back in?  Did I damage my emergency brake to the point of no return or can I fix it myself before tomorrow morning?

David, Pull up on it again and push the button in.  If that doesnt work, unscrew the button and the spring and shaft piece will come out so you can at least put the thing down.  I never use those things.  They are annoying.   If the car is automatic why use it and if its a stick, leave in first gear.  Use the E brake only on inclines.  Roger
