Volvo Repair: Key wont turn all the way to start my car, steering column lock, 2000 volvo s40

Question
I got into my car today, put the key into the ignition, it turned once and will not allow me to turn it to start it up, i can turn it back and once forward, but its as though its locked and wont allow me to start my car, my owners manual says something regarding my key having a code that gets sent when i initially put it into the ignition switch, and sometimes the code gets erased or scrambled and my anti theft device kicks in, my car is a 2000 Volvo S40, any help you could possibly give me would be extremely welcomed for im at a total loss

thank you
Patricia

Answer
The piece you need to replace is the steering column lock.  If the key turns one position or more but not all the way, the keyed cylinder is alright. When it goes to unlock the steering wheel in position 2 (or start the car in position 3) it sticks then you need the column lock, the keyed cylinder, the steering column lock, and the electrical ignition switch are all assembled together, you will need only the middle part, the column lock.  It is in two pieces, the lock on the bottom of the column, and the cap that it mounts to on the top of the column.  you will need to get both because you have to destroy them to get them off.  They are mounted with anti theft security bolts to prevent easy theft.  The parts will be a couple hundred dollars and the labor will be 2-3 hours at the shops labor rate.  Any shop can do the repairs however the part can only be obtained at the dealership.
