Volvo Repair: brakes, rotor face, synthetic grease

Question
My local dealer advised that I need new front brakes and rotors and wants over $700 to do it.  I have frequently changed my own brakes and I do not see any magic with the Volvo front brakes.  I understand that they will make terrible noise if the correct lubricant is not used on the back of the pad.  What is the correct lubricant?  Also, how do you remove the front rotor?  Does the bolt in the center need to come out?  Any other tricks?  Any recommendations on a brand of pads and rotors?
Thanks
Steve

Answer
The pads and rotors should be volvo original if you can afford it.  The rotors for volvos are a special design and cannot be resurfaced.  That makes future brake jobs easy in the driveway because thats one less thing for you to worry about.  Aftermarket pads will always squeek and be less effective than factory pads.  The grease can be bought at any volvo dealer.  It is a white silicon synthetic grease.  Just approach any parts counter and aslk for brake grease for your car.  They should know which grease you are talking about.  The bolt in the center is for the axle, do not remove that bolt.  You only need to remove the wheel and then the one bolt on the rotor face.  After that just beat on it with a hammer to get it to come loose.  Be careful not to hit the raised section of the hub in the center around the bolt because it will deform and then you may not be able to get the wheels back on.  Other than those precautions its easy like any brake job.
