Volvo Repair: Transmission, volvo s80 t6, volvo s80

Question
I have a 1998 Volvo S80 T6 with 168K miles and live in Winfield.  The "Transmission Service Urgent" message appeared  the other day and the car would not shift out of 3rd gear.  The dealer said the only solution is to replace the transmission (the original trans was replaced at 68K).  My questions is this; is there any other alternative to replacing the transmission,.... again?
Thanks,
jjp

Answer
well the best way is to replace the trans if is bad inside the labor cost to rebuild by volvo dealer is to expensive  to repair it you better of  geting complete unit but there is other solution to fix you problem most likely you have problem in valve  hydraulic/electric control system but is not so cheaper as complete unit maybe 1/2 price plus labor   .so you say you had the trans replaced at volvo dealer when how many years  and were what dealer?
you can get used trans for you car for 1/2 price comes with with warranty also .were do you service you car what volvo dealer ? if you need my help just email me at volvochicago@yahoo.com im sure i can help you in future with something if you close to chicago area   i know place with 2 used transmission for you car  they have around 68k and other one 71k  they sale for $2030  if you like to know more  email me at above email  thank you
