Volvo Repair: Volvo S70 Whining Noise, volvo s70 glt, initial acceleration

Question
I have a '98 Volvo S70 GLT with a little over 70k miles.  When my engine is cold and I gently accelerate there is a noticeable whining sound.  However it fades away after the initial acceleration (usually in 1 - 3 minutes).  Any idea what this could be?  I've heard the air pump mentioned as a possible culprit since it runs for the first few minutes.

Answer
Pete, see, you didnt need me, you figured it out by yourself.  HA.  If it sounds like a jet plane taking off then its starting to get a little too noisy and will need replacement eventually.  Thats the only time you will hear that pump is when the car is cold.  Roger
